Motion in Air (Ma)

Installation, September 2021, Toronto

Motion in Air (Ma) is dedicated to my mother who passed away immediately after the completion of this project. Through this dedication I acknowledge the immensity of what I received from her, and allude to the familiar idea of earth-as-mother.

Adjacent to the shoreline of Lake Ontario and a busy highway Ma serves as a gateway welcoming commuters travelling into and out of Toronto.

The artwork is comprised of intense colours and images that evoke water, sky and plant life. It draws attention to the interconnections of local ecology with images of dragonflies and their intricate wings, and includes diatoms and botany.  Diatoms produce about 50% of the oxygen we breathe and are plentiful micro-organisms in fresh and salt water.

It is constructed with over 500 aluminum panels, each printed with a dye-sublimation, UV resistant process. The project measures (40 ft) x 122 meters (400 ft ).

A project by Mirabella Luxury Condominiums, adjacent to the Gardiner Expressway, Toronto. Building design by Scott Shields Architects and industrial printing by Alto. The entire project was graciously supported by Lisa Waddell and Julie di Lorenzo.

Pathways/Reseaux is founded on the idea that all networks are overlapping and entwined, bringing people and information from place to place. The cut-out shapes refer to the structure of a dragonfly wing, a map of the city of Ottawa, botanical forms and a spinning element inspired by astrocyte cells - that play a supporting role in the human nervous system, tending synapses and neurons.
